What is CUET UG?

Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG) is a national entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). CUET scores are used for admission to undergraduate programmes in Central Universities and participating State, Deemed and Private Universities across India. citeturn0search4turn0search9

CUET is different from an entrance exam for one single course. The subjects you choose should match the eligibility and admission requirements of the university and programme you want to apply for.

1Shortlist universities and undergraduate programmes
2Check each programme's required CUET subjects
3Select appropriate CUET subjects and apply through NTA
4Prepare for the selected language/domain/general-test papers
5Use your CUET score in the admission process of participating universities

Most important rule: Do not select CUET subjects first and decide the course later. Start with your target university and programme, then choose the subject combination required by that programme.

CUET UG eligibility

Eligibility for CUET and eligibility for a particular university programme are not always the same thing. The NTA examination rules determine who can appear, while the participating university determines the programme-specific qualification, subjects and other admission conditions.

Class 12 / equivalent

Students should check the current NTA eligibility provisions and the qualifying-examination requirements of every programme they wish to target.

Programme subjects

A university may require specific Class 12 subjects or specific CUET subject combinations for a programme.

University rules

Always read the latest programme eligibility published by the university. NTA itself warns candidates to confirm the respective university's eligibility and subject requirements.

Example: Two B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. programmes at different universities can have different CUET subject combinations. Never assume that one combination works everywhere.

CUET UG 2026 subjects

The official CUET UG 2026 syllabus lists three broad categories: Language, Domain and the General Aptitude Test. The 2026 syllabus page lists 13 languages, 23 domain subjects and the General Aptitude Test. citeturn0search0

CUET UG 2026 exam pattern

CUET UG is conducted by NTA in computer-based test (CBT) mode. The exact number of subjects a candidate can choose, question counts, duration and schedule are governed by the current year's information bulletin and should not be copied from older CUET articles.

Language tests

Language papers assess the skills and content prescribed for the selected language.

Domain tests

Domain papers follow the official CUET syllabus for the selected subject.

General Aptitude Test

Where required, preparation should cover the areas specified in the current official syllabus and bulletin.

Why the pattern needs checking: CUET has changed its structure across examination years. For the 2026 attempt, use the official 2026 Information Bulletin linked on the NTA CUET portal rather than an old coaching website. citeturn0search1

What happens after CUET?

Taking CUET does not automatically guarantee admission to a university. After the examination and score release, candidates must follow the admission process of each participating university and programme.

Check university portal

Follow the university's own admission notice, registration process and deadlines.

Check programme eligibility

Confirm that your Class 12 subjects, CUET subject combination and other conditions meet the programme requirements.

Complete preference/admission steps

Where the university requires programme preferences, counselling or a separate admission portal, complete those steps on time.

Key point: CUET is the common entrance examination; universities remain responsible for their programme-level admission rules and selection process. citeturn0search10

Courses you can target through CUET

CUET is used across a wide range of undergraduate programmes. Availability varies by university and year, so students should search the exact programme before choosing subjects.

  • B.A. and B.A. (Hons.) programmes
  • B.Com. and B.Com. (Hons.) programmes
  • B.Sc. and B.Sc. (Hons.) programmes
  • BCA and computer-related undergraduate programmes where offered
  • Management and business programmes such as BBA/BMS where offered
  • Integrated and multidisciplinary undergraduate programmes
  • Education and other professional undergraduate programmes where applicable
  • University-specific programmes with their own published CUET subject combinations

For example, the official CUET portal publishes university-level programme information and subject combinations; the University of Delhi pages show that required CUET combinations can differ significantly between programmes. citeturn0search10
