CHAPTER-7
(The Necklace)

CBSEChapter 7 Thinking about it

The Necklace

1. The course of the Loisels' life changed due to the necklace. Comment.

The necklace completely changed the course of the Loisels' lives. Before losing it, Monsieur and Madame Loisel lived a modest but comfortable life. Although Matilda was dissatisfied with her social status, they were free from serious financial problems.

When Matilda lost the necklace borrowed from Madame Forestier, the couple decided to replace it instead of admitting the truth. To buy a similar necklace, they borrowed a large amount of money and fell into heavy debt. They had to dismiss their servant, move to a smaller house, and live a life of hardship. Matilda did all the household work herself, while her husband worked extra hours to repay the loans.

For ten long years, they struggled and sacrificed their comfort. In the end, they discovered that the original necklace had been made of imitation diamonds and was worth very little. Thus, the loss of the necklace transformed their lives from relative comfort to years of poverty and suffering.

2. What was the cause of Matilda's ruin? How could she have avoided it?

The main cause of Matilda's ruin was her vanity, pride, and desire for a luxurious lifestyle. She was unhappy with her simple life and constantly dreamed of wealth, expensive clothes, and social prestige. Her pride prevented her from admitting that she had lost the necklace.

She could have avoided her ruin by being honest with Madame Forestier immediately after the loss. If she had confessed the truth, she would have learned that the necklace was only an imitation and inexpensive to replace. Her lack of honesty and her obsession with appearances led to years of unnecessary suffering.

3. What would have happened to Matilda if she had confessed to her friend that she had lost her necklace?

If Matilda had confessed the loss to Madame Forestier, her life would have been very different. Madame Forestier would likely have informed her that the necklace was not genuine and was worth only a small amount of money.

As a result, Matilda and her husband would not have needed to borrow huge sums of money to buy a replacement. They would have avoided ten years of poverty, hard work, and suffering. Their financial stability and quality of life would have remained largely unchanged. The story highlights the importance of honesty and open communication.

4. If you were caught in a situation like this, how would you have dealt with it?

If I were caught in a similar situation, I would choose to be honest and accept responsibility for my mistake. I would immediately inform the owner about the loss and explain the circumstances truthfully.

Although admitting the mistake might be embarrassing at first, honesty would prevent greater problems in the future. I would also offer to help replace or compensate for the lost item if necessary. The story teaches that hiding the truth often creates bigger difficulties, while honesty and courage usually lead to better solutions.
